How To Find Your Photography Style in 6 Minutes

Finding your photography style is one of the most important steps in growing both your creative voice and your photography business. Whether you are brand new to photography or feeling lost after years behind the camera, knowing how to define and develop your style can bring new clarity, confidence, and direction to your work.

At The Kefi Club, I’m passionate about helping photographers build meaningful, sustainable careers — and your style is a huge part of that journey.

In this post, we will break down the process into three simple and practical steps so you can start discovering your unique photography style today.

1. Experiment with Different Photography Genres

The first step in finding your style is to experiment without pressure. Too often, photographers feel like they need to pick a niche immediately. But real growth comes from trying different types of photography and noticing what you naturally connect with.

Try shooting portraits, branding, weddings, street photography, lifestyle sessions, or product work. See what feels exciting. Explore what drains you and what energises you. Your preferences will reveal themselves through hands-on experience.

At this stage, you are not looking for perfection. You are looking for patterns.

2. Build a Photography Mood Board

One of the most powerful ways to understand your visual preferences is to create a mood board. Use Pinterest, Instagram collections, a folder on your phone, or even a physical board with printed images.

Save photos that you are drawn to — not just for their technical quality, but for how they feel.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I gravitate toward soft light or strong contrast?

  • Do I like bold colours or muted tones?

  • Am I drawn to clean compositions or layered storytelling?

Once you gather a few dozen examples, you will start to see themes. These are clues to your evolving style.

3. Study Your Own Work

The third step is often overlooked, but it is crucial. Go through your own photo library and look at the images you are most proud of. Which photos do you come back to over and over again?

These are the images that represent the core of your creative voice. They may not be the ones that performed best on social media, but they are the ones that feel the most “you.”

Once you identify the common threads in your favourite work, begin leaning into those elements. Repeat what works. Refine what feels natural. Let go of what does not serve your vision.

Remember: Style is an Ongoing Journey

It is important to remember that your photography style is not fixed. It will grow and shift as you gain experience, try new techniques, and evolve as a person.

Give yourself permission to explore, change direction, and refine over time.

The photographers who stand out are not the ones who chase trends. They are the ones who consistently create work that is true to themselves.
